FAQ
Is this a beginner's league?
Not at all. Most teams participating in HHSVL have been competing for years in regular season leagues, including boys. School that don’t sanction volleyball but have a club often participate in tournaments. Many HHSVL players are active USA Volleyball Club athletes as well. This is a competitive league that will challenge everyone. And if your team is composed of beginner players, this is an excellent league to learn and encourage continuous growth.
If this is off-season, why NFHS rules and not USA Volleyball rules?
All High Schools that sanction Girls Volleyball play by NFHS rules. Often those Girls Volleyball Coaches are supporters of Boys Volleyball Team or Club in their school. We support and look forward to the sanction of Boys Volleyball by UIL. When that happens, they will likely be playing by NFHS rules. Playing by NFHS rules provides uniformity in the league, as well as familiarity to the rules applicable to most High Schools as the sport continues to grow. If you are more used to USA Volleyball rules, we assure you the transition is smooth.
Can I provide my own officials?
Yes, you can. In fact, if a staff member in your school is a qualified and certified official, it can help you save some money.
No one is perfect, and officials are human as well. We understand errors happen in almost every game. If you, or a staff member is officiating a home game, you need to be careful that mistakes do not give the impression of being bias. We want fair games all around.
How long is the league?
All together is about nine to ten weeks. Our goal is to schedule a minimum of six games for each team, but seven or eight is not uncommon. Each team is assigned to play one game per week. Normally we have two weeks for playoffs, and one more for championship games. In the event that this grows bigger, we may have an additional week for a State Championship. Yes, we’re thinking big.
My school does not sanction Volleyball and will not sponsor a Club. Can we still join HHSVL?
If you have schoolmates that are interested in playing volleyball but the school does not sanction the sport and cannot sponsor a club, you can still participate as a team in HHSVL but we will need the School’s Athletic Director or Director of Extracurricular Activities to send us a written notice or email with the following:
- The school’s decision
- The authorization of the school allowing the students to represent the school independently
- The school agreeing to display awards won by the team
- Proof of enrollment in the same school for all players of the team (school ID with graduating year will suffice)
- Confirmation that they are not enrolled as a team in a USA Volleyball Club
- The team will need a Coach, and be familiar with NFHS rules and be able to provide a non-playing line-judge per game
I registered my team but I need to withdraw. What's the refund policy?
If you need to withdraw, you need to inform us by email. We understand that sometimes things change.
If you withdraw by January 24, 2025, a 10% admin fee will apply to make up for credit card and refund processing fees that we are charged.
30% if you withdraw by Sunday, February 9, 2025.
No refunds if you withdraw on February 10, 2025, or after.
Does HHSVL require team or athletes registration to other organizations such as USA Volleyball?
No. This is for High School teams or High School Clubs. Your players only need to be enrolled students of the participating school. Our league has no direct affiliation with USA Volleyball or other organizations however, we have collaborated with active USA Volleyball clubs and have received the support from the Lone Star Volleyball Region officials when we are in need or in search of something. They have helped us find officials and even introduce us to schools that have Volleyball Clubs or that are looking for off-season participation for their teams.
Why the low cost? And why do teams have to pay for officials?
High School sports should not be expensive. Even after the low registration cost, we often give discounts to new school teams or clubs, and have also allowed some to register for free. Our goal is to help grow the sport of volleyball by providing opportunities to compete, specially among boys. Because of that reason, our proceeds are not enough to cover the officials fees even for a few games. We encourage all teams to charge spectator fees and sell snacks to fundraise for the officials fees and other equipment they may need. We also provide a list of fully qualified and certified officials, and some of them are often willing to lower the rates. We also provide ideas on how to mitigate official fees while keeping your game ethical. Teams are also welcome to do their own fundraisers. We use the UIL Officials Fee Schedule for standard officials rates, minus the traveling fee.
How many teams can I register?
That is up to you. During our HHSVL ’24 Season we had three schools that registered four teams, one in each category: Boys Varsity, Boys JV, Girls Varsity, and Girls JV. Understand that if you have a team with too many players, less playing time will be given to each of them. In that case, we recommend to split your team in two. If you have a large group of very skilled players, you may want to consider registering two teams in the same Varsity league.
My school doesn't have a volleyball team or a club. How do we start?
If your school has a Girls Volleyball team, getting the support of their coach is essential. You will likely use the same equipment and they need to know you will be responsible. Also, they could help you get practices started and perhaps some girls will be willing to help you as well and teach you skills.
If your school does not sanction the sport, a Volleyball Club will be best approach. The Director of Extracurricular Activities/Clubs will need to know of your interest. They will give you the school policy in starting a club.
Lastly, Parents and Parent Association can also help you. Remember you first fans will likely be your family. Fundraising for a purpose shows the school how serious you are. Many times schools put budget as an excuse. Fundraising helps lifting or lightening that burden from them.
Feel free to contact us for more questions and suggestions. Every existing volleyball team or club had a different journey. We can share many experiences that worked out in other schools.
Can UIL Girls Volleyball teams participate in HHSVL?
Yes! However, there are a few restrictions you need to be familiar with for example, the regular Coach cannot be directly involved with the team in practices and or games. The Coach however can supervise the off-season program. It is important to be familiar with the UIL regulations applicable to the sport to avoid penalties.
For complete information, please visit the UIL Section 1330: GIRL’S VOLLEYBALL PLAN, the UIL Subchapter C: ATHLETICS (1205-1210) to reference Section 1209, and the UIL Volleyball Manual Off-Season Regulations. You school or school district may have additional rules for off-season sports.
What's the process of joining the league?
The process is simple. After you register, you will receive an email with important dates and documents. The dates are for mandatory and optional meetings. The documents explain the league’s rules in more detail, and is to be shared with your coaching staff. Every team staff member needs to be familiar with those rules. Then you will receive your game schedule, contact information for the other league teams, and contact information for officials we recommend. All you do from there is confirm your games dates or reschedule as needed, and schedule officials right away.
